Bugati T50.... with a difference.
I have three pre-started builds on the bench but I just can't work up the enthusiasm to return to them and I'm waiting on enamel paint drying on the little Aston Martin Ulster, SO.... something had to be done and this is it.
The kit:
The real deal...........
......... but of course, nice as it is, it's also a bit boring, so it's going to be rodded. Not sure yet wether Rat or Custom but leaning to custom.
It's a pre-started kit I bought a couple of years ago. Engine was assembled and painted (won't stay that way of course) and chassis glued to the fender assembly. (which I have removed)
First job is to get the body/chassis fitting and looking correct so the front fenders had to go.
I'd like to channel the front of the body and I think by cutting a slot in the rear fenders parallel to the body, this can be achieved. This should allow the body to rotate downwards without leaving a gap at the top of the fenders. (hopefully... LOL)
Fortunately, the kit and the real deal have two spare wheels. I'll use these on the rear axle.

The picture of the Yellow and Black car is stunning. I never knew this model existed or I would have built one by now. Be sure to put a Hemi in it.

Sorry Buck.... going with the original twin cam straight eight.
Working on the principle of a little at a time, I made a couple of tentative slots with my rotary tool and a cut off disc.
Good job I did as I think it has become apparent, that in order to achieve a front end only chanelling, the slot will need to be much longer.
This isn't difficult but I doubt I could get a fine enough and neat enough cut so that it didn't need filler. Also the contour line would be totaly destroyed.
Overall, I think I'm better leaving it as is.

Wondered about the contour line. How about if you add plastic along the bottom of the body to extend it to cover the frame? Since you cut a slot in the vestigial running board how about you cut a wedge out and then bend the outer edge towards the body so that it looks more planned. :-) If you paint the frame the same color as the body you might achieve much of the channeled looks as the frame will tend to blend with the body.

Super cool, Al. Glad you're keeping it an all Euro Hot Rod. A nice modern Jag V12 would be nice.
I'll be watching this one - I've got that Heller kit sitting in the stash. Nice detail on it.

Kit wheels Paul. Six of them. I'll be using four on the rear axle.

Not bothered about the exposed chassis rails Dave, in fact I think they could look cool. Just wanted to get the front of the body down for a more rakish look. I think adding styrene as you say would only make it look taller. Since you cut a slot in the vestigial running board how about you cut a wedge out and then bend the outer edge towards the body so that it looks more planned. :-) Good idea in principle but I doubt if there is enough lateral flexibilty to achieve that Dave. If you paint the frame the same color as the body you might achieve much of the channeled looks as the frame will tend to blend with the body. Another good idea Dave and one I may well use. Thanks.

The straight eight is staying Mike. Shay is pushing for a V8 but even a big block would look too small in there.
I've settled on this for the leading edge of the rear wings. I think!!! LOL.

I dont know Al, but that one of those HUGE airplane engines wouldn't look right at home in there.

Re: Bugati T50.... with a difference.
The modellers mantra of 'Modify one thing and you will need to modify several others also' as usual, is applying here too. LOL
As expected, the front bulkhead is going to have to be shortened and set back a little to accommodate
the engine. I may raise the front of the a body a little too. The radiator will need to be shortened also.
Also as expected, I may not be able to use the bonnet.
I'm going to look into lowering the engine but at the mo, I doubt I can get it low enough. Even If I can, the bonnet panels will need to be shortened. So I may be screwed on that one!!! LOL

Re: Bugati T50.... with a difference.
I agree with Clay, Al. I'm afraid the top bonnet pieces might make it look more like a dirt track racer.
If I might suggest: I'd raise the body slightly. Cut the bulkhead line vertical and cut the top edge to match the inset curves (Bugatti styling touch). Then run support rods from the bottom sides of the radiator supply tank to the bulkhead parallel with the cam covers.
Or not.

I agree with Clay. Put the Bonnet in the scrap yard and see if you can lower the radiator and grille shell just a tad. Sweet looking hot rod.

X3 Al!! Lose the bonnet. That engine is too impressive to hide. What about a great big beer keg at the rear for a petrol tank??

No!!
OK.... bonnet is history. Rad will get lowered.
Good idea Jouhn but more appropriate for a rat rod methinks. I've decided this one will get a nice shiney paint job!!

Yup!! and I see Buck's at it too.
Been messing around with the ride height and rear wheel arch clearance. I'm happy overall with it but would have liked the fron end a bit lower but cannot see a way to get it down any further, without it looking like a stupid arrangement.

I've seen where the kit exhausts aren't very accurate. Have you run into that?

Re: Bugati T50.... with a difference.
Thanks all.
Oddly enough Dave......
I'll try this again shall I???
The kit exhaust leaves a lot to be desired when compared to the real deal........
...... (can you guess which is which?? LOL) so something needed to be done to achieve a little more realistic effect. Not finished but on it's way:
The kit was second hand off eBay and had been started. As a result, there are at least two parts missing. The first is the little angled dizzy attachment that fits on the cambox. So I had to make one up. Fiddly, but not difficult.
The other know missing part is the right rear engine mout which will, I think, be quite difficult to replicate, so I may just make two scratch built ones instead.

Hmmmmmm seen those piccies somewhere else recently lol.
This is looking really good so far, chopping bits off and refitting/repositioning wings without screwing up the lines of a perfectly good bugatti is really impressive.
