Rod & Custom Magazine RIP Empty Rod & Custom Magazine RIP

Bought the September issue of Rod & Custom yesterday at my local Wm.Smiths,
only to find that it's the last issue - in paper, anyway.
I've bought the magazine for years, way back in the 60's.
Okay, it died and was resurrected before,
but with the electronic wizardry of iPad books and magazines, it looks final.
...end of an era for me.

One of my favorites as a kid growing up. I think Street Rodder kinda blew them out of the water.

Sad news. Well, culture and needs change. just as our lives changed over time, so it is with everything.

I'm afraid that is the ultimate fate of most of the automotive magazines, at least in the print version. Just look at all of the modeling magazines that have bit the dust over the years.

...I even remember when Hot Rod Magazines 'colour' centre section was so called,
because it was printed on green paper.

Boy, I'm getting old !

I think there will still be a market for a few good, high quality printed magazines. But the market will change some.

Take my favorite one, Hot VWs. They still have a great printed monthly magazine, printed in great color on high quality shiny paper. It still comes in a plastic wrapper, something they tried to ditch a couple of years ago, but brought back by a subscriber's demand. But they now offer a great new website with additional digital "specials" on recent big VW shows. And this is great too!

I save all of my Hot VW magazines, and use them from time to time for reference.

So I see it as a mixture of print and digital offerings that the best ones will offer to the subscribers.

The old magazines are valuable resources to inspire and remind folks of how it really was. Tho I love the Net and all that is here, sometimes the original articles and fotos have what ISN'T here!
