Day 21.........
............ and another dynasty is about to be born.
Been forty eight pure breed hens eggs in there (five or six varieties) for twenty one days now. First one hatched at 22:10 tonight. They should all be hatching in the next few hours and then have to remain in there four four hours to dry off before moving to the heated rearing pen.
I could be in for a long night!!! LOL

Nice one Al
If you don't know what to do with them, we've got four baby royal pythons that we bred this year that are always hungry lol.
Seriously though, what breeds do you have, my dearly departed dad used to keep chickens/ducks/geese when I was younger.
Any chance of piccies of the adults please?

Here ya go Colin:
Barnvelder.
Derbyshire Redcap.
Lakenvelder. (Cockerel)
Vorwerk.
Welsummer.
Exchequer Leghorn.
Sit. Reps. as and when.
Assuming we get a 75% hatch rate and a hen to cockerel ratio of 6:1, then we should get 30 laying hens. When they start laying eggs as pullets, at about 20 weeks or so, we should be getting about 8000 eggs per year.
Man that's a lot of scrambled, poached, boiled, fried eggs!!!! LOL

Derbyshire Redcap? Second from top.
No can do Colin.
The incubator must stay closed until all of them have hatched. Otherwise the humidity drops. This causes the un-hatched egg shell to go hard, preventing the chicks breaking out.
The chicks are fine in the incubator without food and water for three days. The live on the yolk sac.

Re: Day 21.........
Possibly the Redcap , but I can only really remember the Derbyshire bit as I was only young. I was more interested in the ducks like the Campbells and runners. We had three geese and the Drake was completely in charge of everything including the two collies, two shepherds and the St Bernard.... They're evil! :-)
I know a bit about incubator restrictions Al, we have the same with python eggs, they run on 50 - 60 % humidity @80 degrees or so.
What I meant was photos when they're all out and about and fluffed up.
Do you have an overhead infrared lamp or are you heating an enclosure or the room for the chicks?

Reminds me of the doyen of tasteful living, Martha Stewart and her breeds of hens. I think she prefers Chinese, great for Asian entrees!

We have an enclosure set up in the corner of one of our barns, with an infra red light that is keeping the temperature at a constant 95 degrees.
36 hours since the first one hatched and still only four chicks!!!

Re: Day 21.........
It's now day 25 and all of them should have hatched by now. I fear something has gone wrong.
This little one never stood a chance, it broke through the shell but was 'glued' to the inside and couldn't break out properly. So close yet so far. Nature is cruel sometimes.
The five hatched chicks however, are doing well.

Re: Day 21.........
It's day 26 and I think it's all over bah the shouting. Day 21 is mean hatching day. Day 19 is early and day 23 is late.
Howver. two did start hatching this am and although the chicks had made a hole in the shell, they were unable to make further progress.
So heart in mouth, I broke the shells on both to find they were stuck to the shells. Just went for it and broke/pulled the shells away from them, taking some feathers. A few hours back in the incubator and they a looking a bit scraggy but are now doing fine.
This is 'Lucky'
No photo of the other one yet but she's going to be called 'Luckier Still'

Re: Day 21.........
Sticking chicks and late arrivals normally mean that the humidity and temp have both been lower than then should be, yet you had some pop out on time...... Any chance the incubator isn't evenly distributing the heat?

Re: Day 21.........
That's a good thought Colin.
The incubator has an automatic egg turner but this is renoved on day 18. That's the critical period for temp and humidity to remain constant so I believe.
Just ordered four thermometers to go along with the one we already have.
I'll put them all in the incubator and test out your theory.

Re: Day 21.........
Also I found a small computer fan running on low voltage inside the incubator gives a little extra air movement without affecting temp and humidity.
I suppose in one way reptile eggs are a little easier as you don't turn them at all, so placing them directly onto damp vermiculite solves the humidity issue.
I used to laugh at my dad when he said "spending all this cash on heating crates and lighting and we have some success, you leave the bloody things alone in a barn with the chickens and they all hatch out! Go figure! "
