Like Paul (beo) I'm doing this as part of a WWI tribute 100th anniversary build on another site.

I haven't bothered showing the basic construction as Paul has already covered that and while Paul is doing a full fledged British version, I have chosen to portray mine as a German captured vehicle.

So this is where this WIP starts:

MkA Whippet WWI Medium Tank 1918 (German capture) 00341

MkA Whippet WWI Medium Tank 1918 (German capture) 00437

Looks rough at the mo but the weathering will take care of that. Tracks, like Paul eluded too, are crap!!

Next up though is some scratch building. I want to add these storage boxes, exhaust guard and cable too.

(Note the Japanese crew!)

Done some scratch building to-day. Basic box on one side:

Finished box on the other:

On my visit to John, he put me on to this little gadget, which I bought at Hobby Lobby??

MkA Whippet WWI Medium Tank 1918 (German capture) 00342

At $30, it's probably a tad expensive for what it is, but boy is it worth it!!. It makes cutting styrene a pleasure. 90, 45, 60 and 30 degree cuts perfect every time.

Want a perfectly square 1mm long piece of 1mm square styrene...... piece of cake. Try doing it with a hobby knife!

Thanks for the HU John.

Told you you'd be happy with that Chopper.  I have had one for years, got it when I was still model railroading and wouldn't be without one.  BTW, it was actually MRS Hobbies in Sandy, Utah.

Buck: MicroMark Tools has their brand of the chopper on sale until 9/5/14 for $23.95 plus shipping. Their stock# is 84046.

The only weakness I have found over the years is that in thicker material the blade tends to drift to one side or the other and you have to square the cut. Other than that, it is a real time saver for scratch building.

Nice going Al, armour always looks better with a bit of clutter on it.

And ditto for me on that chopper. Its on my extensive wish list.

Thanks Clay.

You'll not regret buying a 'Chopper' guys. Not only is it easier and more accurate, it's also much faster too.

Been searching the web for 1:35 WWI style stowage and Jerry cans but no luck at all. I have these in the stash but they are 1:48....... what do you guys think??

MkA Whippet WWI Medium Tank 1918 (German capture) 00149

MkA Whippet WWI Medium Tank 1918 (German capture) 00344

MkA Whippet WWI Medium Tank 1918 (German capture) 00440

Still need to find/make some WWI style Jerry cans though.

Looks good Al.

WW1 jerry cans .... use normal jobs with the three handles, file the sides square, add a longish spout and paint them brass..... job done.... apparently there wasn't a definitive "look" to them and many were improvised from farm stuff found lying about.

any more stowage needed?? i have a bit lying around (still have your address for stalking purposes if you want any of it) ...

Thanks Colin.

Thanks also for the stowage offer but I think I have enough.

The petrol cans I need are like the first three left to right in this photo. Particularly the first one:

MkA Whippet WWI Medium Tank 1918 (German capture) Flimsy10

The easily available one is the one on the right. It's a German design but wasn't introduced until sometime in the thirties.

I'm not sure what these are (Magazine's??).....

MkA Whippet WWI Medium Tank 1918 (German capture) Mk_a_w11

but dum dum here decided the model needs them. One down, eight to go. Gawd..... I hate repetitive work!!!  MkA Whippet WWI Medium Tank 1918 (German capture) 4039365958

No worries Al.

I see now what style you want,  the old square tinnies,  that might be a case of using your new cutter cos they look quite easy to replicate.

They look like machine gun ammo boxes to me,  why they would be attached to the outside I don't know,  exposing yourself to gunfire to retrieve them to reload is a bit strange eh?

Al: I think I saw some cans that might work in the doll house section at Hobby Lobby the other day. I'll check tomorrow and let you know. Personally I think the 1:48 cans are too big, but scale really doesn't matter for the most part on something like that.

Could the mystery pieces be the 'teeth' that bolted to the inside of the track and were driven by the gears?

A French fuel and ammo stash.

A French tank with fuel storage.  Still has the brand name, too. Looks like there's no limit to what got stowed on the tank for transport. LOL

Your cutter might go through larger pieces if you use balsa - especially for the simple tins.

Looking at them whatsitz on the pc (instead of a piddly little screen) they don't look much like ammo boxes/mags to be honest now.
I've had a shifty around and found some images of the tank in a ruined state,  the tracks don't seem to have anything like them on the inside either (not saying it's definitive,  I'm often wrong)

Enigma number 137 to suss out sometime :-)

The tanks looking excellent by the way Al.

Thanks Colin for searching and the compliment.

I've searched long and hard and cannot come to a firm conclusion what they are. I found only two 1:1 photos with them. The Japanese version above and one British version.

However, I did find these:

MkA Whippet WWI Medium Tank 1918 (German capture) Foto910

MkA Whippet WWI Medium Tank 1918 (German capture) Foto810

However, the site is entirely in Spanish. I did a Babelfish translation of the caption and got this:

Grip pads made them from the Panzershop, who are very poor, but is the only thing I found that I serve. Cut them until converted on rounded anchors

So your guess is as good as mine. Maybe for stuffing under the tracks when bogged down???

Whatever they are, I feel they add to the model and I feel I have represented them reasonably well. LOL

Well, apart from some small fuel cans, I think I have finished adding stuff to this one. (Unless you guys have some suggestions!)

Need some ideas though as what to use to represent the steel hawser on the sides of my ref photo.

Also, what to use as rope (thread seems a bit 'fuzzy') and camo netting. All help gratefully received.

They are grousers (cleats) , wooden blocks attached to the tracks to improve traction.
Apparently there are no photos available showing them in service.

Found a pdf file all about the whippet...... Do you want it Al?

Its 11.8mb, if its too big for the mail sever to handle i'll stick it on cd and send it down..

p.s. the little "cutouts" on the blocks certainly add more to the detail than would be expected..... liking this a lot mate.
