I know I shouldn't be starting another build, but this was calling to me so I started it. During one of my forum crawls, I stumbled onto someone who was selling two of my most favorite F1 cars.  The 67 Ferrari 312 and the Gurney T1G Eagle. Both are MFH kits, so I also bought this kit as a practice run to hone my skills for the other two.

This will be a long OTB, because I want to take my time and not rush things.  (besides the fact that all of my OTB's are long)

The kits are mostly white metal with resin body panels, p/e details, spun aluminum wheels, and other misc small bits.

This is the car I'll be doing.  It was driven in the 1967 Belgian GP by Jackie Stewart.

I have this excellent book for reference pictures.

After drilling out all of the locating holes, I dry assembled the chassis.    And tryed the bodywork.

I'm gonna watch this one. I've never worked in white metal, and am looking at a Vauxhall in that
medium.

So far the white metal has been fairly easy to work with.  I bought a soft brass wire brush and some fine steel wool to polish the pieces with.  The interior of the chassis does not call for any paint.  They just want you to polish it out, which I did.

Hi Mr 2whl,

May I ask what do you use to stick the metal parts, do you use glue or do you have to solder them...

Andy...

Paul, I have been interested in this line of kits for some time. I have always loved the lines of the Gurney-Westlake T1G, and have a great reference book on this car, and the other Eagle racing cars.

I have been on the Model Factory Hiro website, and see that they have two versions available. One is 1/20 scale, and the other a new 1/43 scale. I think that the smaller one may just be too small, with 1/20 allowing for more opportunities for detailing.

Now that you have started on this, can you please give some insights on the quality and fit of the kit. This is especially interesting given the majority of the kit cast in white metal. The purchase of one may be in my future, but they are really expensive. Your comments would be appreciated.

Pete, I agree that the 1/43 may be too small.  But MFH does give you everything you need to build the kit.  P/E, hoses, ign wires, thin vacuum formed clear parts, etc.  There are people who have gone beyond what's in the kit, but I have seen some awesome builds out of the box.  Here is one on F1 Modeling of the BRM

http://www.f1m.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=29&t=17460

The quality of the kit is excellent.  But since it is white metal, all of the holes are just dimples and need to be drilled out by the builder.  I probably drilled 40 holes in the engine alone for fuel injection, plug wires, exhaust and water hoses.  I bought a few new tools just for this type of kit.  First was a suede-shoe brush which is soft brass.  I also found a set of metric drills in .05 mm increments from .030 to 1.00 mm.  Then I went to Home Depot and got some 000 and 0000 steel wool.

BRM P83 Model Factory Hiro Brm_0112

Here's a progression of the engine assembly.

BRM P83 Model Factory Hiro Brm_0113
BRM P83 Model Factory Hiro Brm_0114
BRM P83 Model Factory Hiro Brm_0115

I also got done with drilling the locating holes on the front and rear suspensions.  The front control arms need more polishing.

BRM P83 Model Factory Hiro Brm_0116

BRM P83 Model Factory Hiro Brm_0118

The wheels are a turned alum outer and a white metal inner.
BRM P83 Model Factory Hiro Brm_0210

I'm sorry that there is no more to update, but I am a pathetically slow builder.

Thanks for the insight on these kits, Paul. I just think I will have to cut loose for one of the Eagles in 1/20. I love working with metal when I scratch build, so this is just perfect. The detail in these kits is pretty impressive.

Thanks for the link on the BRM. I took a look at each page to follow this build. Fantastic work, and I am sure yours will turn out great too!

The "Hiro" kits look interesting and the look of the rivets does look excellent painted over white metal. My only complaint about working in metal is the edge of a piece. Any flash that needs removal and where two halves meet and there's a seam line mean more work than with softer plastic.
As to 1:43 compared to larger scales, if one has the money and the space for display, the larger the scale, the more detailed and beautiful a model is. 1:43 does have a much larger line from numerous companies of the rare race cars of the past as well as some passenger cars and trucks, thanx!

Ha ha.....I brought it to the OC meeting a few months ago. Maybe that's what I'll have to bring to the next TVMC meeting.
